States that Require the ACT or SAT

If you werent sure whether to take the SAT or ACT, heres some good (?) news: your state may already have decided for you! Thats right as states begin to use college admissions tests to meet national standards required of public high schools, theyre starting to make the ACT/SAT mandatory. One upside of this? Because of this change, some states have already begun to provide the ACT or the SAT free to all juniors (more on this in a second). An important reminder that state and local policies change rapidly. This information is correct at the time of publication (May 2017), but you should check with your guidance counselor to confirm state requirements and subsidies! So just where do you lucky students who experience (or will experience) mandatory college admissions testing live? Which are the states that require the ACT? Which are the states that require the SAT? Well, take a look at the map above or the chart below to find out what your state requires! Things start to get pretty complicated once you start asking the big question: Do I have to pay for a test that Im required by law to take? In most cases: no, you dont. In fact, some states that require the ACT will even let you take the SAT for free (and some states that require the SAT will let you take the ACT for free), giving you a great leg up for college admissions! Some states, however, just dont have it in their budgets (or are being a little stingy!) and youll have to pay for this required test yourself. I know. Sorry. The other big question is What if Id do better on the test my states not requiring? In that case: yes, youll have to take both tests. But some states will pay for the other test, as well, or even give you a choice between the tests (Oklahoma, anyone?) Because all of these requirements and subsidies could make anyones eyes cross, weve gone ahead and put together a map that tells you exactly what your state requires and will pay for (as of May 2017!) Find your state here: My State Is Grey. Whats Up? If your states grey on the map above, congrats! You are not (currently) legally required to take either the SAT or the ACT. Also, sorry! Your state will not pay for you to take either the ACT for free or the SAT for free (though your school district mightand there are subsidies for lower-income studentstalk to your guidance counselor). But rememberstate and local education policies change all the time. So thats not to say that you wont be required/able to take the ACT or SAT for free at some point in the future. A Final Word on States that Require the ACT (and States that Require the SAT) At the end of the day, are there benefits to state-mandated college admissions testing? Definitely, though it may not feel like it when you learn the news. In the first place, if youre planning on going to college, this gives you a concrete deadline so you can start preparing for the exam. It may show you that youll do better on one test than the other. It also gives you a (usually) free opportunity to polish your test-taking skills and get your first test out of the way (most students do better on their second exam). If you werent planning on going to college, this trend takes away one of the barriers that might have been preventing you from doing so (either because of the cost or the time involved) and will hopefully show you that you do have what it takes to succeed in college, if thats what you choose to pursue! So three cheers all around, and heres hoping that those grey states start changing their tune!

In the essay, â€Å"But What Do You Mean?† author and linguistic expert Deborah Tannen argues her feelings on how men and women vary in their use of conversational â€Å"rituals.† She states that males have a tendency to use wording to sustain dominance in conversation; however, women seem to take in to account the feelings of others. Federalism and Poverty Essay Federalism and Poverty Essay in the United States Many Americans believe that the federal government is too big, both in the number of agencies it directs and in the scope of its powers. Some people also think that the daily business of Capitol Hill has no effect on their lives, in part because they believe that politicians do not understand their problems. This dissatisfaction with Washington, D.C., in recent years has renewed debate over the division of power between federal and state and local governments. Federalismthe sharing of power between the states and the national governmenthas been a major issue throughout U.S. history. Thomas R. Dye defines federalism as a division of power between two separate authoritiesthe nation and the stateseach of which enforces its own laws directly on its citizens (Dye, 1999, p.98). When the U.S. Constitution established the federal government in 1787, it only exercised limited or enumerated powers, such as making treaties and printing money. The Tenth Amendment of the Bill of Rights, ratified in 1791, clarified that all other powers belonged to the states: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people, (U.S. Const. , 1791, Amend. 10). Over the years, in response to national crisis, many of the governments powers, particularly those over social programs, were centralized to the federal level. However, in recent years, an increasing number of people on Capitol Hill and across the country want to devolve, or transfer, power from Washington, D.C. to state and local governments. After the 1994 elections, the Republican majority in Congress pursued the devolution agenda as part of the partys Contract with America. According to Michael S. Greve, One crown jewel of the devolution campaignwas the 1996 welfare reform, which replaced the federal Aid to Families with Dependent Children program, a set of very stringent, categorical federal requirements, with block grants to the states (Greve, 1999,p. 120). Within general federal guidelines, the states are permitted to design and implement their own welfare programs. State governments are largely responsible for managing the budgets and enforcing the laws in many policy areas, such as poverty and education. Many members of Congress want the states to take on even greater authority in these areas and other, including environmental protection and crime control. Some experts believe that state governments will be able to tackle these problems more effectively and efficiently than Washington. Others, however, doubt that the federal government will provide adequate funds and worry that some states do not have the necessary infrastructure to offer adequate services. Before the Great Depression, aid to the poor came mostly from churches and charity organizations. When millions of Americans fell into poverty in the 1930s, however, charities and state governments were not financially equipped to provide for the needy, and there was no federal policy in place to provide aid to low-income people. President Franklin Roosevelt and Congress wrote landmark legislation, known collectively as the New Deal, to combat the effects of the Great Depression. The new legislation included massive job programs that provided work for unemployed Americans. Other programs, like Aid to Families with Dependent Children and Social Security, offered financial assistance to people who could not work because of family responsibilities, age, or disability. This legislation also marked the beginning of an era of centralization; control over many services became more concentrated in the federal government. The legacy of Roosevelts New Deal continued with President Lyndon Johnsons War on Poverty three decades later. In 1964, in the annual message to the Congress on the State of the Union, President Johnson declared that no society could be great with poverty in its midst (Johnson, 1964). Johnson implemented social programs designed to eliminate poverty by moving people up the social ladder through vocational education and job training. He also promoted programs, such as food stamps, Medicare, and Medicaid, to help poor and older Americans get enough food and adequate health care. Johnson called his plan the Great Society. There are currently over 6,000 mutual funds available to investors and each one has its own unique style of investing. Here are some of the funds that you may want to consider: Balanced Fund: These funds are probably best for conservative investors (those who try to minimize their risk). These funds often invest in many different stocks and bonds. Some balanced funds invest in over 200 stocks. By doing this, they minimize your risk while also providing fairly stable growth. Dividend Growth: These mutual funds use a special kind of investing strategy. They look for stocks that pay dividends and determine the health of the company by seeing how fast the dividend payments are growing. When a company is doing well, it often raises its dividends. The fund managers look at these as the key factor in deciding which stocks to buy. Companies that pay dividends are often large, well-established companies. Therefore, dividend growth funds are fairly safe investments but they also provide quite a bit of growth. Capitalization Funds: These funds invest in companies whose market capitalization (the total value of all of their stock) falls into their area. Words such as Ambiguous Gender, Transvestites and Homosexuality are introduced and force them to disregard our past misconceptions of gender and sexuality and redefine them. So what makes up a â€Å"Man† and what makes up a â€Å"Woman†? More importantly, are the two sexes as opposite as black and white or is there a gray area in-between which society has been ignoring this whole time? The Webster Dictionary defines a male as being the â€Å"sex that produces germ cells which fertilize the eggs of a female†. I don’t agree one bit. Assignment One Essay 1.) What are some of the hardships faced by indentured servants in Virginia during the early days of the colony? a. Some of the hardships faced by indentured servants was disease such as â€Å"scurvy, bloody flux, and diverse other diseases.† Also, they have not much of a variety of food to eat, they eat â€Å"peas and loblollies†, and so they will do anything to be able to eat other variety of foods. The amount of food they get is shared between other men. Therefore their amount of food intake is not enough to make them full. They have clothes but they are old and dirty because they one of everything they wear. Since they do not have anything worth a penny, because if they do others steal it, they cannot have food other than peas. They cannot eat bread because it cost a penny and they don’t have a penny to buy anything. 2.) How does the physical location of Jamestown colony lead to many of the hardships described in this document? b. It seems they are close to possibly Indian attacks or people from other countries because he stated in the story â€Å"but yet we are 32 to fight 3000 if they should come.† He hasn’t seen any deer or venison since he arrived in Jamestown; therefore the meat source is not a great source for food reliability.
